Turkey in pictures

I arrived in Turkey on June 2nd, 2001.

  • My very good friends Zekiye and Elif, made this trip unforgettable
  • House (left) on the Bosporus with sunlight trailing in

It was Elif's birthday so we went to Cafe de Levant for dinner

Rumeli Hisari is simply called the Fortress of Europe and is a very short walk from the Selvili home

The Orient Express made its first run from Paris to Istanbul in 1889

Topkapi Palace was built between 1459 and 1465. Elif took me there. The Treasury is probably the most famous exhibit, but it was closed so we took a tour of the Harem instead

My favorite place in Istanbul was Hagia Sophia, also called Aya Sofya, built in 537 by the Emperor Justinian of the Byzantine. The Ottomans took over the city in 1453 but the Blue Mosque was not built until 1616.
The Terrace Guesthouse is just off the courtyard between Aya Sofya and the Blue Mosque. My visit with Dogan Yildirim, manager of the Terrace, was a very pleasant surprize as a wonderful afternoon

On the way back to Bebek from Sultanahmet a cab driver felt it his duty to take me to out of the way places for pictures

The big social event of the trip was Melih's 70th birthday bash

The Basilica Cistern is an underground cistern build during Justinian rule in 532. The Byzantines used material from earlier periods for the construction.
